Chapter Eight

“Robbery in progress at Crown Warehouse on Salem Industrial Drive. Reported there are at least eight perps on site. We suspect it’s the same group that’s been breaking in all over. Let's move, Sheriff!” Claire didn’t have to urge Kade on; he’d already picked up his hat and tactical vest and followed her to the underground parking area.

“You’re with me. Who else have we got on this?” Kade asked as they got into the Sheriff’s truck. He was already on the main road before she responded.

“Deputies Samuel, Lillian, Peter, and Patrick are already en route. The local police have also dispatched two units as backup.”

“Fill me in.”

“The robbery was conducted similarly as the other six over the past couple of weeks. These bastards are detailed and ambitious.”

“Sheriff! All hell has broken loose in this area,” Deputy Patrick’s voice cracked over the radio.

“Talk to me.” Kade punched down on the accelerator. The powerful engine surged forward.

“These bastards are clever. Including Crown Warehouse, they robbed four other warehouses simultaneously in an hour. It appears like four separate groups are hitting all over while a fifth set fireworks off from the roofs of shopping malls in a different suburb.”

“You’re right. They’re clever. Too clever considering how they handled previous break-ins up till now. This is a classic tactic of distracting and conquering.” Kade glanced at Claire. “Either they teamed up with a larger gang or this is a different group. Get more deputies and police officers on this. I want every one of those sites covered. Contact Naomi and tell her to start searching traffic cameras and CCTV footage at the targeted malls. I want all of these motherfuckers. My aim is to reduce the crime and change the statistics that Salem has one of the highest crime rates on the west coast. I refuse to let petty crimes turn one industrial area of the city into a criminal hotspot. Not on my watch.”

They arrived at Crown’s Warehouse under a full out gunfight between the gang on the inside and law enforcement on the outside. Kade and Claire ran closer, hunched over, to join the deputies taking cover behind a dumpster.

“This is the opposite of the other break-ins, Sheriff. They never carried weapons. This lot is armed to the teeth,” Deputy Lillian reported as she looked over her shoulder at him.

“They might be armed but they can’t shoot for shit,” Deputy Peter snorted. “We could very easily walk up to the door amidst a spray of bullets and not get hit.”

“I wouldn’t suggest you take the chance. What about the staff? Any of them get out?” Kade studied the surroundings.

“A couple. The police officers took them to safety but according to them there are at least five of the senior managers and owners who are being held hostage.”

Kade studied the front of the building. “Is there a way to get inside safely?”

“Based on the direction the shots are coming from, they’re all concentrated from the front and the back. There’s no entry from the east side but Naomi says there is a loading bay at the west side.
